We have a program called Fresh Start, where we help transition patients from the hospital to intensive inpatient chemical dependency treatment. Once they graduate from treatment, we place them in an apartment for 60 days while we connect them with intensive outpatient therapy, NA/AA Meetings, sponsors, counseling, and job training, and we work on securing housing.
The apartments are empty when we get them. I’ve been able to fill four apartments with my connections through my service project but ran up against a roadblock with the most recent apartment. No one had a twin-size bed to donate.

Karen Holzer never imagined she would win our Annual Valentine’s Day Giveaway. The prize of the Queen-Size Mattress set valued at $2,999 could not have come at a better time. Karen's birthday is in February, but that's not what matters most to her. Her priority is helping her husband, Clark, who is facing stage four esophageal cancer. Most people know Clark by his childhood nickname, Smokey. The cancer forced him to leave his longtime job as a cook at The Swinging Doors , and he retired on December 1. “The bed we have right now is ancient and falling apart," Karen said. "As my husband is currently going through chemo, I think this new bed will be much more comfortable." Smokey's daughter, Annette Guise, nominated Karen for the prize. Here's part of what she wrote, "My stepmom, Karen, has been an incredible source of support for him throughout this difficult journey. A new bed would help make their struggles more manageable and comfortable." Karen’s family was there when she got the call she had won the mattress set. She teared up. Thanks to our loyal customers and hardworking employees, we can help others in our community.
Sometimes, the simplest things can make all the difference and change a life. Just ask Transitions Board Member Sheila Leslie. She heard the call for 16 new mattresses at the Transitional Living Center and answered. Tuesday, the 16 cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks delivery truck arrived loaded with new mattresses for the center’s 16 independent apartments. “We can be part of the solution or part of the problem,” said Sheila. “Any way we can help women to be self-sufficient is part of the solution.” “Having all brand-new mattresses is huge and something we've never done before,” said Transitions Development Director Jessica Burke. She remembers Sheila’s reaction during a board meeting when she first heard talk of new mattresses. “She said, I will buy them. All of them,” said Jessica. Both know how critical a fresh start can be. The Transitional Living Center welcomes women and children. The independent living apartments are a safe place for women escaping domestic violence, exiting drug or alcohol treatment, or searching to find a way out of homelessness. “You do not see women who are homeless as often. But it does not mean they are not there. It just means they are hiding, sleeping in their cars, or couch surfing,” explained Jessica. Both Jessica and Sheila believe in fresh starts. They understand too well how many women caught in transition need to feel safe, valued, and on the path to self-sufficiency. “The mission of Transitions is to welcome someone in a clean environment where they feel safe,” said Sheila. “Part of feeling safe is feeling healthy. So, having a new, clean mattress in a good, safe environment gives them a good foundation to solve whatever led them to Transitions in the first place." Owners Vicki Trefry and her husband of 51 years, Tim, picked up Biscuit’s new cozy sleeping spot yesterday from 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks. “It’s a very nice bed, so soft and furry on top,” said Vicki. “It looks like a mattress. My 21-year-old granddaughter says she’d even sleep on it.” The winning photo captures Biscuit mix lying in a dog bed with his body overhanging the sides.“He’s definitely outgrown his dog bed,” laughs Vicki. “We’re thankful to win a new one.” The couple rescued Biscuit two years ago from her cousin, who thought he was a different breed. “She thought he was a Cocker Spaniel, which is supposed to be hypoallergic, but three of her four great-grandsons ended up being allergic to him,” said Vicky. So, I rescued him from three allergic boys.” The couple, who met at Riverside High School in Chattaroy, are long-time customers of 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, and 5 Socks. Isabel's Blessed with A Brand New Bed! In 2021, Isabel arrived at Union Gospel Mission with nothing. Before she came to Union Gospel Mission , she says she "made terrible choices" due to her drinking and the toxic relationship she was in. "I had no direction and left everything I owned behind, including my apartment, belongings, and furniture." After two years of maintaining her sobriety and working hard to understand what caused her to drink in the first place, Isabel moved into a senior community. In the last two years, she has also worked on building her community at church, which she attends three times a week in addition to her weekly 12-step recovery meeting. When church friends asked how they could help, the first thing that came to Isabel's mind was a bed. That's when one church member, Matt Dean, reached out to 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks. After Matt shared Isabel's story, we were happy to donate a new mattress, box spring, and frame. "I've never had a new bed, thank you," she said through tears of joy. Over the last ten years, 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks owner Jason McSteen's story inspired many people – including the staff he hires. Most of our team share a similar story of overcoming tremendous odds to be where they are today. As part of celebrating our 10th anniversary, we want to introduce our staff members to show appreciation for their dedication, hard work, and commitment to their continued personal growth. Introducing our North Division Store Manager, Andrew Richards. Andrew started as a sales associate four years ago, working at several store locations, helping fill in. He recently earned the manager position at the north store at the end of July. Andrew came to work for us after purchasing a mattress. "I heard Jason's story and liked his dedication to God and recovery. It means a lot to me. I've been clean and sober for eight years in November, and working at 16 Cents helps my sobriety." Andrew grew up in a low-income neighborhood in Oregon. When he was 16, Andrew found himself on the wrong side of the law, leading to his incarceration. When he was released from prison, he transferred his post-prison supervision to Spokane to find employment and stability. "I thought it was the better option," said Andrew. "I could either go to a halfway house with a bunch of guys I was in prison with or go to Spokane and live with my parents. Instead of relying on a broken system to get me on my feet, I thought it was the better option coming here." His past mistake wasn't held against him, and he was given a 'second chance' at 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks. Andrew works hard to continue growing as an individual and employee. "I'm thankful that I told Jason about my criminal history. It wasn't something he held against me," said Andrew. "He only wanted to know how I got as far as I did and managed to keep it together." Over the last four years, Andrew has been part of our growing business, going from one to five stores. "Jason encourages us to be dedicated to our customers," said Andrew. "And to work from a place of integrity and compassion."

Meet Downtown Store Manager Tim Peyron. Tim worked his way up from day laborer to upper management in just four and a half years. Living in a faith-based Christian Discipleship program – Reaching Out Advocating Recovery (ROAR), Tim had been clean & sober for nine months when the call came from 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks. “My first day was day labor to help receive a truckload of mattresses,” said Tim. “At the end of the day, Owner Jason McSteen offered me a full-time entry-level warehouse job. Since then, he has coached, trained, and encouraged me to the position I’m in today.” Over the years, Tim’s hard work and dedication earned him several promotions, including Warehouse Assistant Manager, District Operations Manager, and Assistant Manager for the valley location. On October 1, he became our downtown Store Manager. “I’ve been in several different positions,” said Tim. “Jason must have seen something promising in me because he took me under his wing. He’s invested much time in me, which you don’t see in many organizations. But he made me earn my stripes,” he added. “Everyone has a part to play, but I love that you’re not stuck in any position. All I had to do was strive to accomplish my goals.” The day Tim started working became a pivotal moment in his life and a continuation of his sobriety. On September 22, he celebrated five years of being clean & sober. Since he started working, he’s moved out of ROAR, received full custody of his 16-year-old son, and has shared custody with his seven-year-old daughter. “Absolutely, it played a role. When I lived in ROAR, I didn’t have custody of my kids,” said Tim. “Fast forward, my son lives with me, and my daughter is with me throughout the school year.”
Rising from the ashes, 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks delivered hope for a Medical Lake family. Melissa and David Mangis are picking up the pieces after the Medical Lake wildfire, having lost their family home in the tragic event. “They lost everything,” said Charlene Roman. “It was extremely devastating for them.” Charlene and the Mangis family are members of the same church, Crossroads Christian Fellowship. Once she learned of their loss, she spearheaded a church-wide effort to help them. “I submitted an email to 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks, in the hope that they could help with some of the items they needed,” said Charlene, who didn’t mention her request to anyone. “I have purchased numerous pieces of furniture from 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks in the last four years; I know their heart for the community.” We responded to Charlene’s request, and our team surprised the family with a brand-new Queen bed frame and a twin-over-twin bunk bed. We delivered it to their new apartment in Airway Heights. “The family is so humble. I think they would have been happy with anything,” said Charlene. “I feel blessed 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks responded and helped the family with nice new items.” We can help others in our community because of our loyal customers. Due to various circumstances, a woman and her children only had a few hours to move out of their home. So they started over in a new apartment and had absolutely nothing. "I had just lost my house. I was given 3 hours to get out, so I only left with a couple of garbage bags of clothes for myself and the children. It was just a horrible time for us. Mikel Therien has been working at 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks since 2019. In a short period, he went from working in our warehouse to being a sales associate and then a store manager at our North Spokane and Airway Heights stores. "I love the family environment at 16 Cents. They took me in from day one and made me feel like a family member. It's been an honor to work for a local business that is always helping others in the community," said Mikel. This is Mikel's last week at 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks. He was given a new opportunity at another company in Spokane. "Mikel is one of my favorite employees that we have had at 16 Cents because of his commitment and hard work. Shane Floyd has worked his way up from a delivery team member to store manager at 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks in the Spokane Valley. The rise to a leadership role is a testament to Shane's dedication, perseverance, and incredible work ethic. "I am excited about being the manager of the Spokane Valley store. The owner Jason McSteen has put a ton of trust in me. I'm grateful for that," said Shane Floyd Shane is over three years sober. After a divorce in 2015, he turned to drugs to ease the pain. For some time, Shane was homeless. Then, due to some poor choices, he landed in jail. That's when Shane vowed to get sober and turn his life around. "If you believe in yourself and work hard, anything is possible. Addiction can happen to anyone. But, it is something you can rise above and get your life back," said Shane. Shane takes great pride in being a manager and is excited to be part of our newest store in the Spokane Valley. "I like working here because this isn't just a job. When Embrace Washington reached out to 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks about a grandma taking care of her four-year-old granddaughter in need of new furniture, we quickly offered a new sofa and dining room set for the family. “I can’t believe it. We’re so excited about the new kitchen table. I love spending time at the table, eating, and sharing about our day. It’s such a gathering place,” said Dawn, the grandma taking care of her granddaughter. In May, Dawn and her granddaughter woke up from a nap to find their house on fire. They escaped with just the clothes on their back and their sweet puppy. “The whole thing was just horrible,” said Dawn. Dawn and her granddaughter moved into a new apartment. However, they didn’t have any furniture until now. We’re honored to work with local organizations like Embrace Washington to support families and foster kids. “The entire team at 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks is amazing. When the Spokane Police Department reached out to 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks about a family in need of beds, we quickly invited officers to our store. During the holiday season, the police department is constantly looking for ways to help the community. Through its Adopt-A-Family program, officers will buy families microwaves, food, clothing, and other essentials. In an email to our store, Officer Jen Kerns writes: We try to make Christmas Day a special day for the kids and spoil them with books, clothes, toys, and other things they might not receive otherwise. Officer Kerns shared the story about a family with two kids sleeping on the ground and living with a grandparent. This week, several officers stopped by the store to pick up mattresses and beds for the family. We're honored to help the Spokane Police Department and make the season a little brighter for families in need. Merry Christmas!

Don took a chance on Jason and helped him navigate, negotiate and win in the furniture industry. Because of the impact Don made in Jason’s life, Don’s name is now added to the Golf Tournament, as he loved his golf! Shane Floyd has worked his way up from a delivery team member to store manager at 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks in Airway Heights in less than a year. The quick rise to a leadership role is a testament to Shane’s dedication, perseverance, and incredible work ethic. “I really like working at 16 Cents because it’s such a small, tight-knit group of people. We’re more like family. I have a similar background to Jason, and I really appreciate what he does for the community,” said Shane Floyd. Shane is two and a half years sober. After a divorce in 2015, he turned to meth and heroin to ease the pain. For some time, he was homeless. Then, a commercial burglary charge landed him in jail and changed his life. From that point on, he vowed to get sober and turn his life around. “Jail pushed me in the right direction to get things straightened out,” said Shane. Shane takes great pride in being a manager, and he is excited to be a part of our new sleep and mattress department in Airway Heights. “It’s a step in the right direction to keep moving my way up,” said Shane. When Andrew Richards needed a new mattress a few years ago, he found just what he was looking for at 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks. He was so impressed with the quality of the mattress; he applied to work at our furniture store a year and a half ago. Andrew is now the manager of the Ash Street Clearance store. While he enjoys selling furniture, he also enjoys connecting with fellow employees who know what it’s like to reach rock bottom. “I do have a core group of co-workers that I can talk to. It’s a blessing to share with others who have gone through similar situations,” said Andrew. When Andrew was just a sophomore in high school, he was tried as an adult and sentenced to prison for robbery. He served eight years behind bars. When Andrew lost his freedom, he found Jesus and sobriety. He’s now five and a half years sober and lives with intention every day for his wife and five beautiful kids.
If you’re in the market for a new sofa or mattress, Mitch Reeves, who works in sales at 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks , will greet you with a friendly smile and great conversation. “Every person has a story. There’s an exchange every time you have a conversation with someone. It’s good to meet with people and perhaps sell some furniture in the process. We have such a laid-back atmosphere. We might sit down with a customer and talk for an hour before we talk about furniture,” said Mitch Reeves. After a career in car sales, Mitch applied to work for 16 Cents in December. As Mitch will tell you, he appreciates the company’s core values and the faith-based leadership of the owner, Jason McSteen. Mitch appreciates his job because it also allows him time to dedicate to his church. “I want to know Christ. That’s the center of my life,” said Mitch. The flames are out, and the smoke has cleared. However, the devastation of the fire that destroyed Malden lingers and will continue to be felt for months and years to come. 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks took your donations to the food bank in small town Malden along with the furniture. As Lori Dickinson looks at the new furniture inside her new home, she wipes away tears of joy. Every tear is a symbol of gratitude and resilience. It's been eight months since Lori lost everything in the Malden wildfire. Now, thanks to the Western Anabaptist Missionaries from Montana and 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks, she's in a brand-new furnished home. "It's better than my old home. I'm just smiling when the tears get wiped off," said Lori. Friday, 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks delivered two mattresses, a couch, a dining room table set, nightstands, and a dog bed she handpicked during a $5,000 shopping spree. "They did such an amazing job. 16 Cents even put the mattress pads on for me," said Lori. A few months ago, members of the Western Anabaptist Missionaries from Montana picked Lori to receive a brand-new house. When 16 Cents learned about Lori's story, we surprised her with a shopping spree to furnish her new home. Lori is looking forward to sinking into her new couch, getting a good night's sleep on her pillow-top mattress, and eating a slice of pizza with family around her new dining room set. When a devastating fire swept through the small town of Malden, Lori Dickinson lost everything. Her home, furniture, family photos were all reduced to ashes in a matter of seconds. Lori wasn’t home at the time. However, her 85-year-old mom watched as a wall of flames moved closer to their home. A quick-thinking neighbor rescued her and saved her life. “It was pretty traumatic and devastating. We were very thankful for that neighbor,” said Melissa, Lori’s daughter. Even though Lori lost everything, she didn’t hesitate to help others in her small town. Lori helps with the food bank in Malden, and in the days and weeks following the fire, she made sure everyone had food and other essentials. She continues to make the commute from Spokane, where she lives with her daughter, to Malden to help run the food bank. A few months ago, members of the Western Anabaptist Missionaries picked Lori to receive a brand-new house. Construction started in February, and Lori plans to move into her new home in the next few weeks. “Oh my gosh, my mom cried and cried when she found out they choose her,” said Melissa. A few weeks ago, Melissa reached out to 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks to see if she could get a discount for her mom in Malden, who is now slowly rebuilding her life. On Friday, Jason McSteen, owner of 16 Cents, met Melissa and Lori and walked through her brand-new home in Malden. Thanks to our loyal customers, we surprised Lori with a $5,000 shopping spree to 16 Cents. Lori cried tears of joy and relief. “That is so awesome and really great for them to do that. Oh my gosh, it’s so awesome,” said Lori Dickinson. Lori is looking forward to picking out a new mattress, bed, and couch for her new home. “That would be such a big deal. It’s so great. For the first time, Gemechu Wedesa and his family have a home of their very own. We first met Gemechu in September of 2017 when he applied for a job at 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks as a bookkeeper. “I was new to the country, and initially, I couldn’t find any jobs. I was educated in Ethiopia, and no one recognized that foreign education. World Relief Spokane told me 16 Cents had a bookkeeping position, and I filled out the application. Jason, the owner, was interested, and then I started,” said Gemechu. Gemechu, along with his three kids and wife, left Ethiopia a few years ago to escape political, religious, and civil unrest. “We as a family couldn’t stay there. We wanted to be in a safe place. So, we moved to Indonesia for five years while waiting and processing paperwork to come to the United States,” said Gemechu. Gemechu and his family recently moved to Ohio to be closer to a large Ethiopian community. Gemechu works remotely for 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks, and through hard work, patience and determination, he bought a three-bedroom home with a big living room and basement. “We were very excited because we never expected that we would-be homeowners,” said Gemechu. Gemechu is thankful for the opportunity to provide for his family and lay a foundation for a better life. “I used the money I made from 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks as a down payment for our new home,” said Gemechu. As an airman in the Air Force, Mikel Therien traveled the world, spent time in the Pentagon and the White House. Now, you’ll find him managing our Ash Street Clearance Store. There’s no place he’d rather be. “I love it. When I come to work, I feel safe, and I’m around people in sobriety. They are my second family,” said Mikel. Mikel is celebrating two years of sobriety this week. While serving in the military, Mikel was injured and turned to prescription drugs to ease the pain. He quickly became addicted to opiates- something he never imagined could happen to him. “The pills were doctor prescribed because I had a prescription; I didn’t realize the effect they had on my life,” said Mikel. Mikel hid his drug addiction from his then-wife, young kids, and extended family for several years. When he couldn’t get pills anymore, he turned to heroin. In 2019, as Mikel laid in a jail cell for various outstanding warrants, he cried and prayed for the strength to get sober finally. “I was fortunate. The court offered me one more chance,” said Mikel. That second chance came in the form of a prison alternative drug treatment program. With his newfound faith and endless support from loved ones, he slowly recovered and landed a new job at 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks . “It’s by far the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I’ve always been a hard worker. I just had to find myself again,” said Mikel. As the drugs faded away, Mikel’s drive for success took a front-row seat. In a short period, Mikel went from working in our warehouse to a sales associate and now, store manager. Mikel now also has joint custody with his sweet girls. “I like spoiling them. Daddy can give them a good life,” said Mikel. Mikel hopes his journey to sobriety will inspire others who have lost their way. “There is hope; it is possible. You have to have it in your heart and put in the hard work,” said Mikel. We’re so proud of you, Mikel! Thank you for sharing your story and being an inspiration to others. Everyone has a story. At 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks, we stumble across stories all the time. And because of the support from our customers we can give back to the community. Talena is a formerly homeless woman that lost everything due to addiction. Thanks to New Horizon Care Center and pure determination on her part, Talena is clean, sober, and has a new apartment. When Talena brought her daughter home from the hospital in July, she didn’t have a couch, crib, or mattress in their apartment. Even so, Talena remained optimistic. After all, she survived a traumatic delivery, and her daughter is thriving after being born weighing just over 14 ounces. “Ardyn is an incredible warrior,” said Talena. And so is Talena. Over the years, Talena has used meth off and on. She’s been sober since she found out she was pregnant and planned to stay that way with the help of the Parent-Child Assistance Program and Spokane Addiction Recovery Center. “I asked for help, after everything I had gone through,” said Talena. After Ardyn was born, Talena couldn’t go back to Moses Lake, where she’d been living before giving birth. Her home there had no running water or power. With her daughter still in the NICU, Talena stayed at House of Charities for two months and then at St. Margaret’s shelter for another few months. “I was definitely out of my element. It was the first time I was in a homeless shelter. Going from the hospital to a homeless shelter, I could’ve easily fallen back, but having someone else to be responsible for, including my daughter, is my motivation,” said Talena. Ardyn spent nearly four months in the hospital, gaining weight, learning how to eat, and doctors patiently waiting for her tiny lungs to develop. With the help of Rapid Re-housing, Talena moved into an apartment just days after bringing Ardyn home from the hospital. When 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks learned of Talena’s story, we knew we needed to help. We surprised Talena and Ardyn with a $2,000 shopping spree. Talena picked out a new couch, mattress, and bed frame and kitchen table - everything to start the next chapter in their lives. “I’m in shock. I cried tears of joy. It’s amazing, helpful, and I’m grateful for it. It’s going to help so much. I don’t have to sit on the floor to feed my daughter. I can now sleep in a good bed, that sets you up to conquer the day,” said Talena. Shortly after the delivery, we received this beautiful email from New Horizon Care Center. "We want to thank you for the wonderful donation to our client, Talena. She was surprised and overwhelmed by your generosity. Your kindness brings another view of this world we live in by showing that we are a community that helps others in need. Sometimes all it takes is one person to make a difference with a kind gesture. At this store, country music is the soundtrack for shopping and managing a furniture store. “I have it on all day and all night. The furniture gets lonely at night,” laughed Allen Ver Hage , Store Manager. Allen started working for 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks three years ago, and in that time, he’s become the go-to guy for furniture in Airway Heights. “My job is to figure out our customer’s problems and find a solution,” said Allen. His small-town charm, welcoming smile, and worn work boots put customers at ease as they look for a new couch, mattress, or chair. “I love the small-town feel in Airway Heights. It’s what I’m used to. I grew up in Rockford and went all through Freeman schools,” said Allen. After graduating, Allen joined the Army and served for two years as a combat engineer. Allen enjoys connecting with retired military customers and airmen and airwomen serving at Fairchild Air Force Base. His pride in our country is evident, with every customer he meets. “I like to focus on American made furniture, like our mattresses from Idaho. I like it to be as local as it can get,” said Allen. Imagine experiencing the most tragic chain of events possible and surviving. She escaped domestic violence with a broken jaw, concussion, black eye and more. Then struggled with homelessness. Due to perseverance and hard work, she has a job and a place to live. Thanks to your support, we gave her a new bed. When the bed was delivered, she sat on it, bounced and smiled. She has never had her own new bed. Before they left, our delivery team said a prayer for this grateful woman. Jason says, “that is what this is about. It started four years ago. The weather was bad, but the response was phenomenal! As the years go by, the growth continues to get bigger. We are thrilled to share 53 barrels of cold weather items were collected for Family Promise of Spokane, Family Promise of Spokane has an Emergency Shelter for families to stay together. The clothes are welcomed to help keep many warm this winter season. Crazy Campout 2016: 10 barrels! Crazy Campout 2017: 37 barrels! Crazy Campout 2018: 50 barrels! Crazy Campout 2019: 53 barrels! A variety of visitors stopped by with cold-weather gear including 7-year-old Korbin spent his weekend filling barrels with blankets, sleeping bags, clothes, toys, food, and toiletries to help homeless men, women, and children at Family Promise of Spokane . Korbin filled 10 barrels. Giving back to the community is something that makes him excited. “Some people live outside in the cold and don’t have a home to live in and are cold, so they need warm stuff." – Korbin “We are excited to continue the tradition of the #CrazyCampout here at 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks. Everyone has a story. At 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks, the owner Jason McSteen, has a story and is determined to make a difference in his life and those around him. Jason enjoys sharing stories about his employees. Skyler Delay isn’t afraid of hard work. At just 23-years-old, Skyler is a sales associate three days a week handling sales and customer service at our North Division store. You'll also find him lending a hand at our furniture warehouse. Skyler started working for our company three years ago, cleaning and unloading furniture. At the time, Skyler kept to himself, rarely engaging in conversations with customers and other employees. “I was doing grunt work, that’s the way it’s set up. Now, I’m selling furniture to customers. It’s a lot easier to engage with other people, and I’m coming out of my shell,” said Skyler. Skyler enjoys his work and is thankful to be surrounded by inspiring people. “It keeps me busy, out of trouble and I’m around people I want to be like,” said Skyler. Skyler dropped out of high school in the 10th grade and soon after started working in construction. The work was challenging, and Skyler knew if he wanted a better life, he would need his GED. A few years later, he earned his high school diploma, giving him a solid foundation for success. “I’m proud of where I am, and feel like I’m in the right place,” said Skyler. For the past five years on Memorial Day, Shaun Key has waved Old Glory at different locations in the area, however for the past two years; Shaun has stood at 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks Division & Sharp location. And this year, more supporters. "This is a day about remembering our troops, about our freedom, who gave their lives, sacrificed their lives for us so it's the least we can do for them,” Key said. “We are honored to have Shaun and the others share their support throughout the day. We know Shaun was in the military, and we are blessed to have him and the others share their respect at this location. Jason McSteen, owner, continues to make investments in his business, and his staff. “Four members of our staff were sent on this trip. We're proud of what the team accomplished during their trip to Idaho,” says owner, Jason McSteen. “A sincere thank you to Therapedic Mattress Idaho for sharing their knowledge and expertise with 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks employees.” Our staff received an overview of the coil on the coil mattress systems and the layers that go into the different comfort systems. All in reparation to build their own mattresses! After many mistakes, we are much more suited to help our community find the right mattress for the best possible sleep. As part of a community give-back, Jason helps where and when it makes most sense. Rick Clark of Giving Back Packs reaches out periodically for help with a homeless person. Rick’s mission is to provide back packs for homeless and love on them. Rick Clark was tagged in a social media post where a young woman was asking if anyone had a bed they did not need anymore. She was 6 months pregnant and had been without a bed for several months! It was a very thoughtful and respectful post, and Rick could tell she was in need. It's hard to think of a pregnant mom sleeping on the ground. Rick reached out to 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks . When he explained Samantha's situation, we were glad to help. We called Samantha and asked her what type of mattress she preferred and what size bed she wanted! Thanks to the generous support of our customers, we delivered a new queen mattress set, frame, pillows, and bedding. She was very grateful! Congratulations, Biscuit!! The two-year-old Corgi mix is our July Pet Bed Giveaway winner. Owners Vicki Trefry and her husband of 51 years, Tim, picked up Biscuit’s new cozy sleeping spot yesterday from 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks. “It’s a very nice bed, so soft and furry on top,” said Vicki. “It looks like a mattress. My 21-year-old granddaughter says she’d even sleep on it.” The winning photo captures Biscuit mix lying in a dog bed with his body overhanging the sides.“He’s definitely outgrown his dog bed,” laughs Vicki. “We’re thankful to win a new one.” The couple rescued Biscuit two years ago from her cousin, who thought he was a different breed. “She thought he was a Cocker Spaniel, which is supposed to be hypoallergic, but three of her four great-grandsons ended up being allergic to him,” said Vicky. So, I rescued him from three allergic boys.” The couple, who met at Riverside High School in Chattaroy, are long-time customers of 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, and 5 Socks. Annual Valentine's Day Mattress Winner! We delivered Bailey's brand-new Immunity Queen Size Mattress Set valued at $2,999. She was the lucky winner of our annual Valentine's Day giveaway. "I'm very grateful that they can do this yearly," said Bailey. "It gives people a chance to do something for themselves. Like most parents, I put things on the back-burner if it doesn't involve my kids." Winning the mattress was just what she needed. The past few years have been challenging. "In late 2022, I left a really bad relationship. The majority of my belongings were tossed out or destroyed." Due to a work-related injury, Bailey's been out of work for over a year. After three surgeries, the doctors are unsure if she can return to her position as a medical assistant. "When I saw 16 Cents' Facebook post about the contest, I thought it could be an amazing opportunity to get a new bed," said Bailey. "I needed one but didn't have the funds for it. All our extra money goes straight to the kids." Bailey has been sleeping on an old mattress purchased several years ago and is looking forward to sleeping on the new one. "It was hard to believe we won until 16 Cents messaged me," said Bailey. "I'm looking forward to having a new mattress, let alone a whole new set. It's really special. I feel like this is going to be our year."

Isabel's Blessed with A Brand New Bed! In 2021, Isabel arrived at Union Gospel Mission with nothing. Before she came to Union Gospel Mission , she says she "made terrible choices" due to her drinking and the toxic relationship she was in. "I had no direction and left everything I owned behind, including my apartment, belongings, and furniture." After two years of maintaining her sobriety and working hard to understand what caused her to drink in the first place, Isabel moved into a senior community. In the last two years, she has also worked on building her community at church, which she attends three times a week in addition to her weekly 12-step recovery meeting. When church friends asked how they could help, the first thing that came to Isabel's mind was a bed. That's when one church member, Matt Dean, reached out to 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks. After Matt shared Isabel's story, we were happy to donate a new mattress, box spring, and frame. "I've never had a new bed, thank you," she said through tears of joy. As our delivery team was leaving, Isabel said, "I'm new to this kind of generosity. God has blessed me through 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks, and I'm forever grateful."

Over the last ten years, 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks owner Jason McSteen's story inspired many people – including the staff he hires. Most of our team share a similar story of overcoming tremendous odds to be where they are today. As part of celebrating our 10th anniversary, we want to introduce our staff members to show appreciation for their dedication, hard work, and commitment to their continued personal growth. Introducing our North Division Store Manager, Andrew Richards. Andrew started as a sales associate four years ago, working at several store locations, helping fill in. He recently earned the manager position at the north store at the end of July. Andrew came to work for us after purchasing a mattress. "I heard Jason's story and liked his dedication to God and recovery. It means a lot to me. I've been clean and sober for eight years in November, and working at 16 Cents helps my sobriety." Andrew grew up in a low-income neighborhood in Oregon. When he was 16, Andrew found himself on the wrong side of the law, leading to his incarceration. When he was released from prison, he transferred his post-prison supervision to Spokane to find employment and stability. "I thought it was the better option," said Andrew. "I could either go to a halfway house with a bunch of guys I was in prison with or go to Spokane and live with my parents. Instead of relying on a broken system to get me on my feet, I thought it was the better option coming here." His past mistake wasn't held against him, and he was given a 'second chance' at 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks. Andrew works hard to continue growing as an individual and employee. "I'm thankful that I told Jason about my criminal history. It wasn't something he held against me," said Andrew. "He only wanted to know how I got as far as I did and managed to keep it together." Over the last four years, Andrew has been part of our growing business, going from one to five stores. "Jason encourages us to be dedicated to our customers," said Andrew. "And to work from a place of integrity and compassion."

Meet Downtown Store Manager Tim Peyron. Tim worked his way up from day laborer to upper management in just four and a half years. Living in a faith-based Christian Discipleship program – Reaching Out Advocating Recovery (ROAR), Tim had been clean & sober for nine months when the call came from 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks. “My first day was day labor to help receive a truckload of mattresses,” said Tim. “At the end of the day, Owner Jason McSteen offered me a full-time entry-level warehouse job. Since then, he has coached, trained, and encouraged me to the position I’m in today.” Over the years, Tim’s hard work and dedication earned him several promotions, including Warehouse Assistant Manager, District Operations Manager, and Assistant Manager for the valley location. On October 1, he became our downtown Store Manager. “I’ve been in several different positions,” said Tim. “Jason must have seen something promising in me because he took me under his wing. He’s invested much time in me, which you don’t see in many organizations. But he made me earn my stripes,” he added. “Everyone has a part to play, but I love that you’re not stuck in any position. All I had to do was strive to accomplish my goals.” The day Tim started working became a pivotal moment in his life and a continuation of his sobriety. On September 22, he celebrated five years of being clean & sober. Since he started working, he’s moved out of ROAR, received full custody of his 16-year-old son, and has shared custody with his seven-year-old daughter. “Absolutely, it played a role. When I lived in ROAR, I didn’t have custody of my kids,” said Tim. “Fast forward, my son lives with me, and my daughter is with me throughout the school year.”
Rising from the ashes, 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks delivered hope for a Medical Lake family. Melissa and David Mangis are picking up the pieces after the Medical Lake wildfire, having lost their family home in the tragic event. “They lost everything,” said Charlene Roman. “It was extremely devastating for them.” Charlene and the Mangis family are members of the same church, Crossroads Christian Fellowship. Once she learned of their loss, she spearheaded a church-wide effort to help them. “I submitted an email to 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks, in the hope that they could help with some of the items they needed,” said Charlene, who didn’t mention her request to anyone. “I have purchased numerous pieces of furniture from 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks in the last four years; I know their heart for the community.” We responded to Charlene’s request, and our team surprised the family with a brand-new Queen bed frame and a twin-over-twin bunk bed. We delivered it to their new apartment in Airway Heights. “The family is so humble. I think they would have been happy with anything,” said Charlene. “I feel blessed 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks responded and helped the family with nice new items.” We can help others in our community because of our loyal customers. Due to various circumstances, a woman and her children only had a few hours to move out of their home. So they started over in a new apartment and had absolutely nothing. "I had just lost my house. I was given 3 hours to get out, so I only left with a couple of garbage bags of clothes for myself and the children. It was just a horrible time for us. Mikel Therien has been working at 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks since 2019. In a short period, he went from working in our warehouse to being a sales associate and then a store manager at our North Spokane and Airway Heights stores. "I love the family environment at 16 Cents. They took me in from day one and made me feel like a family member. It's been an honor to work for a local business that is always helping others in the community," said Mikel. This is Mikel's last week at 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks. Shane Floyd has worked his way up from a delivery team member to store manager at 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks in the Spokane Valley. The rise to a leadership role is a testament to Shane's dedication, perseverance, and incredible work ethic. "I am excited about being the manager of the Spokane Valley store. The owner Jason McSteen has put a ton of trust in me. I'm grateful for that," said Shane Floyd Shane is over three years sober. After a divorce in 2015, he turned to drugs to ease the pain. For some time, Shane was homeless. Then, due to some poor choices, he landed in jail. That's when Shane vowed to get sober and turn his life around. "If you believe in yourself and work hard, anything is possible. Addiction can happen to anyone. But, it is something you can rise above and get your life back," said Shane. Shane takes great pride in being a manager and is excited to be part of our newest store in the Spokane Valley. "I like working here because this isn't just a job. When Embrace Washington reached out to 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks about a grandma taking care of her four-year-old granddaughter in need of new furniture, we quickly offered a new sofa and dining room set for the family. “I can’t believe it. We’re so excited about the new kitchen table. I love spending time at the table, eating, and sharing about our day. It’s such a gathering place,” said Dawn, the grandma taking care of her granddaughter. In May, Dawn and her granddaughter woke up from a nap to find their house on fire. They escaped with just the clothes on their back and their sweet puppy. “The whole thing was just horrible,” said Dawn. Dawn and her granddaughter moved into a new apartment. However, they didn’t have any furniture until now. We’re honored to work with local organizations like Embrace Washington to support families and foster kids. “The entire team at 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks is amazing. When the Spokane Police Department reached out to 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks about a family in need of beds, we quickly invited officers to our store. During the holiday season, the police department is constantly looking for ways to help the community. Through its Adopt-A-Family program, officers will buy families microwaves, food, clothing, and other essentials. In an email to our store, Officer Jen Kerns writes: We try to make Christmas Day a special day for the kids and spoil them with books, clothes, toys, and other things they might not receive otherwise. Officer Kerns shared the story about a family with two kids sleeping on the ground and living with a grandparent. This week, several officers stopped by the store to pick up mattresses and beds for the family. We're honored to help the Spokane Police Department and make the season a little brighter for families in need. Merry Christmas!

We have four furniture and mattress stores, served thousands of customers, and donated tens of thousands of dollars to charities that help the lonely, broken, and hungry. Don took a chance on Jason and helped him navigate, negotiate and win in the furniture industry. Because of the impact Don made in Jason’s life, Don’s name is now added to the Golf Tournament, as he loved his golf! The quick rise to a leadership role is a testament to Shane’s dedication, perseverance, and incredible work ethic. “I really like working at 16 Cents because it’s such a small, tight-knit group of people. We’re more like family. I have a similar background to Jason, and I really appreciate what he does for the community,” said Shane Floyd. Shane is two and a half years sober. After a divorce in 2015, he turned to meth and heroin to ease the pain. For some time, he was homeless. Then, a commercial burglary charge landed him in jail and changed his life. From that point on, he vowed to get sober and turn his life around. “Jail pushed me in the right direction to get things straightened out,” said Shane. Shane takes great pride in being a manager, and he is excited to be a part of our new sleep and mattress department in Airway Heights. “It’s a step in the right direction to keep moving my way up,” said Shane. When Andrew Richards needed a new mattress a few years ago, he found just what he was looking for at 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks. He was so impressed with the quality of the mattress; he applied to work at our furniture store a year and a half ago. Andrew is now the manager of the Ash Street Clearance store. While he enjoys selling furniture, he also enjoys connecting with fellow employees who know what it’s like to reach rock bottom. “I do have a core group of co-workers that I can talk to. It’s a blessing to share with others who have gone through similar situations,” said Andrew. When Andrew was just a sophomore in high school, he was tried as an adult and sentenced to prison for robbery. He served eight years behind bars. When Andrew lost his freedom, he found Jesus and sobriety. He’s now five and a half years sober and lives with intention every day for his wife and five beautiful kids.

There’s an exchange every time you have a conversation with someone. It’s good to meet with people and perhaps sell some furniture in the process. We have such a laid-back atmosphere. We might sit down with a customer and talk for an hour before we talk about furniture,” said Mitch Reeves. After a career in car sales, Mitch applied to work for 16 Cents in December. As Mitch will tell you, he appreciates the company’s core values and the faith-based leadership of the owner, Jason McSteen. Mitch appreciates his job because it also allows him time to dedicate to his church. “I want to know Christ. That’s the center of my life,” said Mitch. The flames are out, and the smoke has cleared. However, the devastation of the fire that destroyed Malden lingers and will continue to be felt for months and years to come. 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks took your donations to the food bank in small town Malden along with the furniture. As Lori Dickinson looks at the new furniture inside her new home, she wipes away tears of joy. Every tear is a symbol of gratitude and resilience. It's been eight months since Lori lost everything in the Malden wildfire. I'm just smiling when the tears get wiped off," said Lori. Friday, 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks delivered two mattresses, a couch, a dining room table set, nightstands, and a dog bed she handpicked during a $5,000 shopping spree. "They did such an amazing job. 16 Cents even put the mattress pads on for me," said Lori. A few months ago, members of the Western Anabaptist Missionaries from Montana picked Lori to receive a brand-new house. When 16 Cents learned about Lori's story, we surprised her with a shopping spree to furnish her new home. Lori is looking forward to sinking into her new couch, getting a good night's sleep on her pillow-top mattress, and eating a slice of pizza with family around her new dining room set. When a devastating fire swept through the small town of Malden, Lori Dickinson lost everything. Her home, furniture, family photos were all reduced to ashes in a matter of seconds. Lori wasn’t home at the time. However, her 85-year-old mom watched as a wall of flames moved closer to their home. A quick-thinking neighbor rescued her and saved her life. “It was pretty traumatic and devastating. We were very thankful for that neighbor,” said Melissa, Lori’s daughter. Even though Lori lost everything, she didn’t hesitate to help others in her small town. Lori helps with the food bank in Malden, and in the days and weeks following the fire, she made sure everyone had food and other essentials. She continues to make the commute from Spokane, where she lives with her daughter, to Malden to help run the food bank. A few months ago, members of the Western Anabaptist Missionaries picked Lori to receive a brand-new house. Construction started in February, and Lori plans to move into her new home in the next few weeks. “Oh my gosh, my mom cried and cried when she found out they choose her,” said Melissa. A few weeks ago, Melissa reached out to 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks to see if she could get a discount for her mom in Malden, who is now slowly rebuilding her life. On Friday, Jason McSteen, owner of 16 Cents, met Melissa and Lori and walked through her brand-new home in Malden. Thanks to our loyal customers, we surprised Lori with a $5,000 shopping spree to 16 Cents. Lori cried tears of joy and relief. “That is so awesome and really great for them to do that. Oh my gosh, it’s so awesome,” said Lori Dickinson. Lori is looking forward to picking out a new mattress, bed, and couch for her new home. “That would be such a big deal. It’s so great. Everyone has a story. At 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks, we stumble across stories all the time. And because of the support from our customers we can give back to the community. Talena is a formerly homeless woman that lost everything due to addiction. Thanks to New Horizon Care Center and pure determination on her part, Talena is clean, sober, and has a new apartment. When Talena brought her daughter home from the hospital in July, she didn’t have a couch, crib, or mattress in their apartment. Even so, Talena remained optimistic. After all, she survived a traumatic delivery, and her daughter is thriving after being born weighing just over 14 ounces. “Ardyn is an incredible warrior,” said Talena. And so is Talena. Over the years, Talena has used meth off and on. She’s been sober since she found out she was pregnant and planned to stay that way with the help of the Parent-Child Assistance Program and Spokane Addiction Recovery Center. “I asked for help, after everything I had gone through,” said Talena. After Ardyn was born, Talena couldn’t go back to Moses Lake, where she’d been living before giving birth. Her home there had no running water or power. With her daughter still in the NICU, Talena stayed at House of Charities for two months and then at St. Margaret’s shelter for another few months. “I was definitely out of my element. It was the first time I was in a homeless shelter. Going from the hospital to a homeless shelter, I could’ve easily fallen back, but having someone else to be responsible for, including my daughter, is my motivation,” said Talena. Ardyn spent nearly four months in the hospital, gaining weight, learning how to eat, and doctors patiently waiting for her tiny lungs to develop. With the help of Rapid Re-housing, Talena moved into an apartment just days after bringing Ardyn home from the hospital. When 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks learned of Talena’s story, we knew we needed to help. We surprised Talena and Ardyn with a $2,000 shopping spree. Talena picked out a new couch, mattress, and bed frame and kitchen table - everything to start the next chapter in their lives. “I’m in shock. I cried tears of joy. It’s amazing, helpful, and I’m grateful for it. It’s going to help so much. I don’t have to sit on the floor to feed my daughter. I can now sleep in a good bed, that sets you up to conquer the day,” said Talena. Shortly after the delivery, we received this beautiful email from New Horizon Care Center. Your kindness brings another view of this world we live in by showing that we are a community that helps others in need. Sometimes all it takes is one person to make a difference with a kind gesture. At this store, country music is the soundtrack for shopping and managing a furniture store. “I have it on all day and all night. The furniture gets lonely at night,” laughed Allen Ver Hage , Store Manager. Allen started working for 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks three years ago, and in that time, he’s become the go-to guy for furniture in Airway Heights. “My job is to figure out our customer’s problems and find a solution,” said Allen. His small-town charm, welcoming smile, and worn work boots put customers at ease as they look for a new couch, mattress, or chair. “I love the small-town feel in Airway Heights. It’s what I’m used to. I grew up in Rockford and went all through Freeman schools,” said Allen. After graduating, Allen joined the Army and served for two years as a combat engineer. Allen enjoys connecting with retired military customers and airmen and airwomen serving at Fairchild Air Force Base. His pride in our country is evident, with every customer he meets. “I like to focus on American made furniture, like our mattresses from Idaho. I like it to be as local as it can get,” said Allen. Imagine experiencing the most tragic chain of events possible and surviving. She escaped domestic violence with a broken jaw, concussion, black eye and more. Then struggled with homelessness. Due to perseverance and hard work, she has a job and a place to live. Thanks to your support, we gave her a new bed. When the bed was delivered, she sat on it, bounced and smiled. She has never had her own new bed. Before they left, our delivery team said a prayer for this grateful woman. Jason says, “that is what this is about. It started four years ago. The weather was bad, but the response was phenomenal! As the years go by, the growth continues to get bigger. We are thrilled to share 53 barrels of cold weather items were collected for Family Promise of Spokane, Family Promise of Spokane has an Emergency Shelter for families to stay together. The clothes are welcomed to help keep many warm this winter season. Crazy Campout 2016: 10 barrels! Crazy Campout 2017: 37 barrels! Crazy Campout 2018: 50 barrels! Crazy Campout 2019: 53 barrels! A variety of visitors stopped by with cold-weather gear including 7-year-old Korbin spent his weekend filling barrels with blankets, sleeping bags, clothes, toys, food, and toiletries to help homeless men, women, and children at Family Promise of Spokane . Korbin filled 10 barrels. Jason enjoys sharing stories about his employees. Skyler Delay isn’t afraid of hard work. At just 23-years-old, Skyler is a sales associate three days a week handling sales and customer service at our North Division store. You'll also find him lending a hand at our furniture warehouse. Skyler started working for our company three years ago, cleaning and unloading furniture. At the time, Skyler kept to himself, rarely engaging in conversations with customers and other employees. “I was doing grunt work, that’s the way it’s set up. Now, I’m selling furniture to customers. It’s a lot easier to engage with other people, and I’m coming out of my shell,” said Skyler. Skyler enjoys his work and is thankful to be surrounded by inspiring people. “It keeps me busy, out of trouble and I’m around people I want to be like,” said Skyler. Skyler dropped out of high school in the 10th grade and soon after started working in construction. The work was challenging, and Skyler knew if he wanted a better life, he would need his GED. A few years later, he earned his high school diploma, giving him a solid foundation for success. “I’m proud of where I am, and feel like I’m in the right place,” said Skyler. For the past five years on Memorial Day, Shaun Key has waved Old Glory at different locations in the area, however for the past two years; Shaun has stood at 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks Division & Sharp location. And this year, more supporters. "This is a day about remembering our troops, about our freedom, who gave their lives, sacrificed their lives for us so it's the least we can do for them,” Key said. “We are honored to have Shaun and the others share their support throughout the day. She was 6 months pregnant and had been without a bed for several months! It was a very thoughtful and respectful post, and Rick could tell she was in need. We called Samantha and asked her what type of mattress she preferred and what size bed she wanted! Gemechu is celebrating his one-year anniversary at 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks, but has been in the United States since 2016. He was hired at 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks after hearing about the store from a World Relief employee. Gemechu has enjoyed being trained by Jason, learning more about business and the many different programs in the United States. Even though it might be a lot colder in temperature than what Gemechu is used to, he is happy about the peacefulness in the United States. Where he comes from religion and politics is what keeps his country at odds. Gemechu is happy to be part of a company that welcomes diversity and prays for many. Jason McSteen has made a difference in his life and his family's. They are blessed to be part of this business.
The story of 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks started when Jason McSteen was on the streets of Spokane, homeless. Jason worked hard to find his way by selling one mattress at a time, and eventually started selling every type of mattress and piece of furniture available in three different locations. Jason continues to give back to the less fortunate as often as he can. Rick Clark, a former homeless man, now Gonzaga University student and soon to be graduate, previously benefited by Jason’s gracious heart. Rick often times reaches out to Jason on projects. Together, Jason, Rick and Mike Ellis work to get the job done right! As the temperature rises in our area, so is the need for water. Jason and Rick know this is important for all those without shelter. This heat can cause major issues. It started with a Facebook post from Rick Clark asking Spokane to donate water to help the homeless. Several days later, generous people were still dropping off cases of water at 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks . Several cases of water were shared to help the homeless women at Hope House. Rick Clark made several trips with cases of water to many businesses in the surrounding area such as the Zips near Whitworth and Office Depot , along with the Hope House and Women’s Hearth. Both locations help women struggling with poverty and homelessness in downtown Spokane. Sean has been with us for about six months, and it’s been a pleasure having him. Sean is moving to Chicago in August to attend school at Moody Bible Institute. Sean shared some recent thoughts about his time at 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks, "Working here has been a nice experience. I feel we are family here. We are a lot of people with really nothing in common except Christ, and that brings us together as we support each other. I had a problem with addiction, but my life transformed when I totally turned to Christ. I really look up to Jason. He came from a point of only having 16 cents, to working hard, and now having three stores and being able to touch so many lives. I remember he hired me on the spot, and handed me a snow shovel. This is only the second job I've had where I can sit with my boss in his office and pray with him. Jason has refined me and helped me to become a better person. He holds me accountable to be thorough even in small things. I am very thankful to have worked here. I will miss my family I have made here."
The name, 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks was developed by the owner as an on-going reminder of what he walked into recovery with. The foundation of this furniture store is about recovery, not just mattresses. As Jason works daily on his recovery he helps others with their recovery. Jason is thankful for organizations like ROAR. ROAR’s Vision is to be the voice in the community, bringing hope for addicts and families. We believe that they are not bad people, just good people making bad choices. Jason McSteen remembered the yearly Thanksgiving Dinner with The Union Gospel Mission that serves dinner and all the fixings to many less fortunate. This day is a day for many to fill their bellies, receive socks, gloves and other items of need. As Jason continues his quest of giving back through his store, on November 3, 2016, he wrote a check for $1,000 and headed to UGM. This check was going to help with the cost of the Thanksgiving Dinner, knowing this will give many people a hot meal and get them off the streets if even for a few hours. Jason recalls the day he stumbled through the doors of UGM with 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks in his possession. Although his addictions were powerful, he found the strength every day to fight the desire to give in. He connected with Family of Faith and the R.O.A.R Recovery program that helped him turn his life around. At the dinner, socks & gloves are handed out to those in need, but first UGM needs to do a community collection. Jason jumped on the opportunity to be a drop off location for these items; this was yet another opportunity to make a difference in a life of the struggling. He understands what it’s like to have nothing. The hope is this dinner will make a difference for someone. 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks is not about furniture, mattresses coffee tables, end tables chair or any item for your home. It’s about the heart and soul of our community; the broken, the less fortunate and the people that are searching for hope. D
Over time, customs to the celebration include gathering in unity, teach the young about the importance of this holiday and to prepare the heart in gratitude as we reflect what provides us with goodness. By “giving-thanks” we opt to extend to others less fortunate than ourselves. Thanksgiving is the expression of gratitude, especially to GOD. As a reflection of this meaning, and what the stores are designed to do, Jason wanted to give a table & food to a family in need. With a social media contest in place, 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks asked for names of people in need. In an electronic random selection, Kyla Lyons was the winner of a new kitchen table & chairs, $500 in groceries & $100 from Avista. Kyla is a new mom and recently married in a new apartment that was without a table for the Thanksgiving holiday. This provided more than goodness in our community. When you purchase a mattress, table, sofa or bed from 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks you are doing more than providing furnishings for your home. You are giving back.
16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks is more than a mattress or furniture store. Every day someone walks through the door with a story. Our latest story started one day when a guy nicknamed Tennessee came to us through Family of Faith Church, where he is now security for the church. Tennessee is also known as Donald Cochran and he comes to us from Knoxville, TN. At the age of 5, Donald’s parents divorced; when his mom remarried, his stepdad was extremely abusive, which lead Donald to running away at an early age. His parents were unable to control him, and soon he found himself in juvenile detention facilities, group homes, psychological help, and doing badly in school. At the age of 11, he found himself charged with breaking and entry, locked up for a while and at his first drug treatment facility at the age of 13. He was kicked out of treatment, attempted suicide several times, overdosed on drugs and was sent to a State Hospital. He was caught with cocaine, and threw out again. As the chaos in his life mounted so did the trouble; he now had 27 charges which involved a stolen vehicle and was shot, point blank range. This opened his eyes long enough to realize that something needed to change, however Donald found himself in prison shortly after these charges from 19-31 with 3 – 15-year sentences; which during this time he became part of “hate groups.” This made him feel like he belonged to something, and he was serving a purpose. After 12 years in prison, he was paroled, and soon after that while running from police he suffered a heart attack; then arrested only to serve the remainder of his sentence once again behind bars. During this time, he was in maximum security, which got him heavily addicted to drugs. When he was released, Donald was in a very deep addiction. The chaos continued and soon, he found himself in a carnival for years which allowed him to continue his habits and cravings for drugs. Eventually he was contacted by someone from Post Falls, ID to help get a Carnival going in the northwest. With this move and same addictive habits, he started manufacturing METH in the northwest and once again was in and out of jail due to his on-going drug issues. Soon, courts sent him to treatment, and five days before completion, he left. He was arrested again and forced to finish by the courts, and he did. He ended up at an Oxford House, then attended Family of Faith at age 45. It was here he found the security he was looking for all these years. He received a life he never knew he could have. He has turned his life around, and he has found out what it means to be an adult. He has taken responsibility for the pain he has caused others, and he is leading a life of sobriety. In his on-going recovery, he has come to realize he has led people astray while in prison (being involved in hate groups) and in his life. He is aware of his past and is aware of the pain he has caused many. He is now dedicated to a different life. After suicide attempts, theft, assaulting people, drug overdoses, prison, hate groups, hate crimes, detention facilities, a point blank gun shot wound, heart attack, maximum security and more, Tennessee is now a man who is married and has a relationship with his past; meaning he is a father, a grandfather, members of his family and a working part of society. His job at 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks allows him work and maintain his sobriety every day. He will never go back to that life. He has found a new life worth living and he is a blessed, happy man living life the best he can by giving back. He oversees the warehouse and inventory. He makes sure the deliveries of every mattress, sofa, end table, bed, toddler bed happen with a smile. He is dedicated to his job, to his wife, his family and his faith. It’s what keeps him going in the right direction daily. Tennessee appreciates the life he has now, and is determined to give back every day. 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks owner, Jason McSteen is determined to give people another chance at life. It’s amazing how a man can walk into Union Gospel Mission with virtually nothing and almost 4 years later be the owner of a furniture store with TWO locations that continues to give back to the community. As the owner, Jason McSteen’s philosophy is to give back to the community and bring awareness to programs that make a difference in lives. In November, Jason McSteen gave money to help UGM with their annual Thanksgiving Dinner which serves a hot meal to the less fortunate in our community. During this meal, socks & gloves are available as supply allows. In an effort to bring awareness of the dinner and the need for socks & gloves, Jason & Mike Ellis, social media consultant, held a #CrazyCampout weekend. Throughout these freezing temperatures, an overnight campout and lots of coffee, 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks raised over 1510 PAIRS of socks, 552 gloves, 426 scarves & hats along with coats, blankets and other items needed for the dinner. The #CrazyCampout was a success! Several women, men & children received gloves, hats, socks and even blankets to help keep them warm during the chilly days (& nights) ahead. Jason McSteen has walked the streets of our community and is well aware what a clean, dry pair of socks can do for someone with nothing. Jason is reminded every day the road he has traveled. It all started when Jason McSteen walked into Union Gospel Mission with 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks. As the recovery process started, so was the daily reminder of what was lost. As Jason worked to get his life back, he worked hard to create a business with one mattress at a time. Soon Jason was able to grow his small business out of a basement to a small store that became a stepping stone to his current location on Division that soon translated into another place on Ash. The focus is recovery every day, not only for himself but for those around him. Jason strives to give back to the community as much as the community gives to him. Helping the less fortunate is important to Jason, as he knows what is like to have nothing. With this in mind, he focuses on building awareness of programs that help people in need and through recovery. 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks has grown with this mission in mind. In December 2016, Jason McSteen & 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks received the Therapedic President’s Award for Sales Performance, Customer Service, and Community Involvement! This award recognizes the support 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks gives to its causes and for the monthly growth in 2016. It’s with high honor that Jason McSteen accepted this award on behalf of his stores and his employees. Jason is reminded daily by his name what got him where he is today. He continues to work on his recovery, recovery of others and giving back to the community. These are areas that are near and dear to his heart.
This story was featured on KHQ on April 23rd – A Spokane Valley 12-year-old proves that you’re never too young to start making a difference. After all, he decided to do something that most kids his age don’t even think of for his birthday. Raesean Eaton asked for shoe donations for the Union Gospel Mission instead of presents. “My goal is however many I can get,” he says. It all started a year ago, after he and his mom went shopping at 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, and 5 Socks. “Jason was there and I didn’t know who he was at first but he looked like my football coach from the back of him and I just went up to him saying hi,” he says. But that chance encounter was everything. Jason told Resean his story, about how he was homeless once. “He told me that the community helped him get back on his feet,” Raesean said. So now, he’s hoping to make a difference. “You can change the world by changing yourself first,” he says. “I want to be a person in the community helping somebody like how they helped him.” If you’d like to help, you can drop off donations at either one of our store locations: 6821 N. 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks is more than just a furniture store. The owner, Jason McSteen has been down the road of recovery for years. He was given a second chance, and he works to give back in many ways. Here’s another way Jason McSteen helps. Corbin is from Huntington, Indiana where he lived a chaotic life with his family. His biological dad and step-mother lived a life of drugs, starting with pot, meth, and then heroine; soon the parents and 5 children were homeless. Corbin was living a hard life, similar to his parents. While somewhat attending school, Corbin played football, and became best friends with Brady. Brady Hill’s dad was the coach of the team and a local Pastor. Soon this Pastor’s family would become Corbin’s family. One day Corbin’s biological dad and step mother left the five kids at the Hill’s home to watch for the night, but never came back. Abandoned and living in a completely different world, Corbin started attending church with the Hill family. He attended church for one year before giving his life to Christ, then continued this journey. During this time, Corbin and his 4 siblings were adopted through the court system by the Hill/Pastor’s home and Corbin cleaned himself up (he’s been clean for 4 years now.) Hen then came to Spokane, WA to attend the Moody Bible School. His goal is to become a Pastor, then to start planting churches. This is where Jason heard about Corbin’s GO FUND ME account. When owner Jason McSteen found out he was trying to raise money for tuition, he gladly gave Corbin $1,500. “Corbin has overcome addiction and plans on serving others. I felt compelled to help”, said McSteen. Corbin was speechless and thankful after receiving this generous gift. Corbin is now working at 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks with Jason McSteen. This is another person directly affected by the generosity from Jason McSteen and 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks. Jason continues selling furniture, beds, bedroom sets, tables and more to continue giving back.
It’s an honor to have the Union Gospel Mission blog feature 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks this month. They did a great job detailing some of the donation drives. They also interviewed the owner, Jason McSteen, about the incredible story of this business. This business is not all about selling mattresses and furniture . Jason McSteen walked into UGM after losing everything with 16 Cents, 3 Shoes and 5 Socks and struggling with a $2500 a day drug addiction. UGM is where he was able to turn his life around, connect with God, have a warm meal, and realize he wanted a better life. As Jason became healthier so was his focus. Recently, he opened the doors to his THIRD furniture store at 1233 N Division. With new signs, additional furniture, beds, mattresses, desks and more, 16 Cents, 3 Shoes and 5 Socks now has THREE locations and continues to give back. Jason McSteen donated $3,000 to Union Gospel Mission Inland Northwest Summer Camp. Because of customer support, 30 underprivileged children will have a life-changing camp experience. Jason is a follower of Christ, and a man of his word. He appreciates all that UGM has done for him, his life, and his focus. The story of Jason McSteen, 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks continues to support the community and Union Gospel Mission. The story is far from over.
Second Customer Appreciation Winner Jill Krema receives $1,500 Shopping Spree!
16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks is grateful to help Jill Krema and her husband, Erik, through a difficult time.
Jill won our $1,500 Shopping Spree Contest, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.
Jill and Erik lived in Kitsap County and cared for her dad for eight years. But when he passed away, they figured they’d downsize dramatically, become digital nomads, continue working, and look for a place to retire. First stop? Spokane.
“It's close to family, our daughter, and we wanted to explore the area," Jill explained.
Then she made the medical appointment that changed her life and learned she has breast cancer.
“I have a mammogram every year,” she said. “If I were going to skip, it would have been this year, with all the traveling we had expected to do. But I am thankful I found an imaging center and got my mammogram. One of the blessings is we are in Spokane, not somewhere where we know absolutely no one."
Jill and Erik shelved their travel plans and quickly found a rental. But they didn’t have any furniture. So, they walked into the 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks. They left with enough to furnish their house so Jill could start treatment soon.
"There was just so much love we felt walking into 16 Cents, 3 Shoes, & 5 Socks, and meeting our saleswoman, Lindsey,” Jill explained. “She helped us with budgeting and gave us a selection of things she could get to the house by the end of the month. That was so important, and I hadn’t even considered it."
They bought a bed, some chairs, and a dining room table. But the story doesn’t end there. Jill entered our Customer Appreciation Contest and won a $1,500 Shopping Spree. Now she can furnish their guest room so their daughter can stay to help them.
“Just so many fortunate things have happened for us,” Jill said. “This is about more than a furniture transaction. We were so blessed that Lindsey was able to help us. And now this! This is one last thing we didn’t have to worry about."
