Annual Valentine's Day Mattress Winner! We delivered Bailey's brand-new Immunity Queen Size Mattress Set valued at $2,999. She was the lucky winner of our annual Valentine's Day giveaway. "I'm very grateful that they can do this yearly," said Bailey. "It gives people a chance to do something for themselves. Like most parents, I put things on the back-burner if it doesn't involve my kids." Winning the mattress was just what she needed. The past few years have been challenging. "In late 2022, I left a really bad relationship. The majority of my belongings were tossed out or destroyed." Due to a work-related injury, Bailey's been out of work for over a year. After three surgeries, the doctors are unsure if she can return to her position as a medical assistant. "When I saw 16 Cents' Facebook post about the contest, I thought it could be an amazing opportunity to get a new bed," said Bailey. "I needed one but didn't have the funds for it. All our extra money goes straight to the kids." Bailey has been sleeping on an old mattress purchased several years ago and is looking forward to sleeping on the new one. "It was hard to believe we won until 16 Cents messaged me," said Bailey. "I'm looking forward to having a new mattress, let alone a whole new set. It's really special. I feel like this is going to be our year."

Engaged at 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks!

When it comes to love stories, Spokane’s Nelida Howell and Jim Walsh made sure theirs is filled with overcoming health challenges, laughter, and an amazing twist that our 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks staff is honored to be part of.

It started when they met earlier this year. Nelida accidentally ran into him with her electric cart while they were both shopping in a different store.

“I made some kind of impression,” Nelida laughed. “I couldn't reach the dog food on the top shelf, so then I asked him for help, and it just went from there.”

Nelida never imagined she’d find someone like Jim. She suffers from a myriad of health problems, including diabetes, heart disease, and vascular issues. She’s on dialysis and is disabled. Jim’s a health care provider able to swing his schedule to help her.

The two began building a life together. Jim took her furniture shopping. He’s a loyal 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks customer, so he introduced Nelida to Lindsey Johnson, his favorite (and only) sales associate.

And then he did the next logical thing. Jim proposed to Nelida in the parking lot of the 16 Cents, 3 Shoes & 5 Socks Division store.

“We're in the parking lot getting ready to go look at something. He asked me to promise I wouldn’t buy anything,” Nelida said. “That confused me because we were there to look at, and possibly, buy something. But he made me pinky promise. And then he said, "As my girlfriend, you can't buy anything, but as my fiancée, you can."

Nelida cried. A little. They went to tell Lindsey. She was excited and inspired. And now Nelida and Jim are planning a December 12, 2026, wedding at the Division store. It is a fitting end to an unusual but amazing courtship filled with hope, commitment, compassion, perseverance, and community.

“He fell in love with me, despite all my complications,” Nelida said. “He's been there for me through anything that I've been going through.”

We’re thrilled to be part of your big day. Thank you for reminding us that our business is about more than sales. We are building a community – one interaction at a time.
